my garage door won't go up

There’s nothing quite like the morning scramble — coffee in one hand, keys in the other, mentally preparing for the day ahead. You’re on time (for once), you’ve remembered your lunch, and you're feeling unusually put-together. But just as you press the button to open the garage door… nothing happens. Not a sound, not a flicker of movement. And just like that, your smooth morning takes a sharp left turn.
This is a common garage door problem lots of people have dealt with, so you are not alone. It's unfortunate when it happens when you're already running late to something and now your car is stuck in the garage!
The first thing to make sure is that you have power to the opener. If the opener has no power then obviously it won't open your door. If that's the case, you're in luck. If you release the garage door opener by pulling on the red cord hanging off the opener, you can manually open the garage door. If you can easily raise the door, then you have an issue with the garage door opener itself. Maybe no power, maybe a bad board or something else. But either way you will be able to get your car out of the garage and be on your way. Keep in mind, if the release is pulled then the garage is not secure. Anyone can lift the door when the opener is not engaged. If that concerns you, then lower the door and re-engage the release, the opposite of how to disengaged it.
If you can't easily lift your door or you can't lift it at all, then you have a mechanic problem with the door. The most common one is a broken spring. There are two types of springs on garage doors: torsion and extension. The extension springs run parallel with the horizontal tracks. The torsion springs are mounted on a torsion tube that sit above the door opening on the wall. There will be either one or two springs on the left and/or right of the center mounting bracket. They should be whole. If yours has a separation in it, then that's your problem. Springs are like the brakes on a car. They are a wear part. The more you raise and lower your garage door, the sooner they break. Standard torsion springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. You can upgrade this to high cycle and get more life out of your door.
A broken spring is not the end of your garage door. They can easily be repaired with a garage door service call!
